Sustainability

Building responsibly with wood and bio-based materials

Environmental transition can only be truly meaningful if we address both operational carbon (emissions from a building’s use, such as heating and energy) and embodied carbon (emissions linked to materials and construction). That’s why the choice of materials, especially structural ones, is so critical.

At Wood Shapers, sustainability isn’t an add-on. it’s where every project begins. By choosing the right material at the right place and embedding this mindset from the very first sketch, we shape low-carbon, high-performance buildings powered by timber, bio-based materials, and modular off-site construction

Every choice we make, from design to sourcing to assembly, is driven by one ambition: to minimise environmental impact while maximising efficiency, circularity, and well-being.

Why wood works
Timber stores carbon, not emissions

Unlike conventional materials, wood is a renewable, carbon-storing resource that continues to contribute positively throughout its life cycle. Each Wood Shapers project is designed to be low-carbon by nature

Using wood and other bio-based materials in construction offers significant carbon benefits:

  • Storing carbon

Every cubic meter of wood locks in nearly a ton of CO₂ absorbed during tree growth. Our buildings act as long-term carbon sinks.

  • Lower emissions

Timber requires far less energy to produce than steel or concrete, drastically reducing embodied carbon.

  • Light and efficient

Lighter structures mean fewer trucks, less energy in transport, and faster on-site assembly.

Circular and off-site construction

Designing for reuse,
Building for efficiency

At Wood Shapers, we engineer smarter by integrating circular design principles and off-site construction methods into every project.

From the earliest design phase, each building is conceived to be modular, flexible, and recyclable and built today, with tomorrow in mind. This forward-thinking approach ensures that every Wood Shapers project is efficient to deliver, adaptable to evolve, and aligned with the principles of the circular economy.

Reusable

01

Designed for reuse

Elements are engineered to be dismantled and reused through reversible connections, turning buildings into material banks for the future

Prefabrication

02

Minimal waste

Prefabrication in controlled environments reduces on-site waste and ensures precision and quality.

Faster

03

Faster, cleaner, safer

Off-site production shortens timelines, reduces noise and dust, and lowers energy consumption, improving both environmental and human performance.

“As we build, nature rebuilds.”

- In time, she restores all we borrow, a perfect balance between creation and renewal.

Certifications

Certified and responsible

All timber used in Wood Shapers projects is sourced from sustainably managed European forests, verified by PEFC certification and full Chain of Custody traceability.

Responsible sourcing guarantees that each project contributes to the regeneration of forests and supports biodiversity.

We also help our partners achieve the highest sustainability standards, including BREEAM, WELL, and BBCA certifications, ensuring measurable environmental and social performance.  We are also a member, via our colleagues of BPI, of the Low Carbon Building Initiative (LCBI)

Well-being & biophilic design

Building with nature, enhancing human comfort

Building with wood and bio-based materials goes beyond environmental performance: it directly enhances human well-being. It reconnects occupants with nature, creating calmer, healthier and more inspiring spaces — a core principle of biophilic design. Compared to conventional constructions, wood naturally regulates humidity, improves indoor air quality and contributes to a warmer sensory experience. These qualities have been proven to reduce stress, boost comfort and support long-term health, making sustainable construction a true driver of quality of life.

The Wood shapers stamp

Our seal of sustainable engineering

The Wood shapers stamp is our official mark of quality. It unites the CFE Group around one shared standard: timber-based, bio-based, circular, and low-carbon construction. For partners and clients, the stamp guarantees that a project has been designed and engineered according to Wood shapers’ sustainable principles, delivering buildings with a lighter and lasting environmental footprint while maximizing comfort and well-being.

More than a label, the Wood shapers stamp represents a culture of innovation, responsibility, and measurable impact
