Theme: Amsterdam’s leading examples of timber and bio-based construction.

New format – by invitation only – designed to take us beyond our usual horizons and draw inspiration from our Dutch peers. 

Wood Academy Explore is a new format created to broaden our perspectives, fuel curiosity and spark inspiration. Through this journey, we will explore new practices, innovative projects and forward-thinking visions, drawing in particular on the expertise and pioneering approach of our Dutch counterparts in sustainable construction.

Welcome address by Isabelle De Bruyne, Managing Director of Wood Shapers. Focus on ongoing and upcoming developments in Belgium and Luxembourg in line with the CFE Group’s sustainability strategy.

Amsterdam Timber Pact: A metropolitan commitment to 20% timber in new construction.
Bob van der Zande, Programme Lead Timber Construction at the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, will present this pact signed by the city and more than 100 key actors in sustainable construction

Visit of the Alliander offices in Amsterdam Westpoort (Noordzeeweg 4) with the architects De Zwarte Hond.

This new 21,000 m² regional office of the network operator Alliander is a project largely built in timber and awarded for its sustainable approach. It was designed by De Zwarte Hond and constructed by Dura Vermeer

Built by Nature immersion: strategy & impact to accelerate timber construction (Singel 542, 1017 AZ Amsterdam)
We will meet Built by Nature at their offices, located next to Amsterdam’s flower market. The session will be led by Thijs van Stigt, Communication Manager for Built by Nature, together with Bob van der Zande, board member. We will learn more about the strategy and results of the Built by Nature Foundation in the Netherlands and Europe. If times allows, screening of the film "Our Future" (or a part of it) which takes us on a journey through six award-winning pioneering projects around the world.

Talk with an Architect (meeting room Bandung)
The Jakarta Hotel is considered one of the most sustainable hotels in Amsterdam. SeArch, the architecture firm behind this project, will present this emblematic achievement in the Dutch hotel landscape.

Lunch & Learn (Papillon, Papaverweg 38): Presentation of Poppies, "when timber reinvents shared housing" by Marc Koehler

Visit of Poppies & Republica (Kaasjeskruidstraat 4, 1032 KP Amsterdam)

Poppies  is a pioneering project designed by Marc Koehler Architects, entirely built with prefabricated timber modules, combining affordable housing, collective living and circular architecture in the heart of Amsterdam North.

 

We will also discover Republica, a dense, mixed-use “urban village” that combines housing, workspaces, leisure and hospitality within a car-free block, powered by circular design principles and a local energy microgrid.

HAUT – Exclusive visit at Jos van Eldonk’s home: co-founder of Common Affairs, Jos van Eldonk is a Dutch architect recognised for his work on new forms of collective and sustainable housing. He will exceptionally open the doors of his apartment in HAUT, an iconic timber residential building in Amsterdam. With its height of 73 metres and 21 storeys, it is one of Amsterdam’s most iconic timber residential buildings. Delivered in 2022, it is usually not accessible to visitors.

Site visit: ABN AMRO. When 110,000 m² of offices become a Paris-Proof model.(Foppingadreef 22, 1102 BS Amsterdam)

ABN AMRO Foppingadreef is one of the largest Paris-Proof transformations in Europe. This circular renovation of 110,000 m² was designed by Broekbakema and carried out by BAM Bouw en Techniek. It demonstrates how an office building from the 1980s can be transformed into a low-carbon, bio-based campus for 11,000 users.
